does not sound weird. in fact sounds more normal than you probably thought.

Henry Rollins: Rare Cuts And Conversation

Kristin and I went to see Henry Rollins last night do a special benefit live version of his radio show. The Echoplex was transformed into a living room setting with couches and small candle-lit tables, perfect for listening to Henry’s version of a Fireside Chat. Most everything he played was a rare recording because a) he had access to the master recordings or b) he was personally given cassettes by members of the band and/or people close to them. So he played a mix of an amazingly beautiful re-edited version of “Killer Queen” highlighting Freddie Mercury’s pitch perfect vocals to different versions of your favorite Black Flag songs to a solo Nick Cave piano only version of “From Her to Eternity” to a bunch of rare Ramones recordings to a remastered (by himself) version of The Stooges “Raw Power” with the original backing vocals(!) to a cassette of a recording of Bad Brains’ second show that H.R. gave to him to “hold on to” back in the early 80’s. All of this on top of the stories behind all of these recordings told with such fanboy enthusiasm. It was two plus hours of this. And it was incredible.

LA Weekly has a decent photoset from the show here.

He was doing a lot of this.

And more of this.

Here’s another write up of the show here.
